The 2011-2012 season of karate finished with a bang in June at our annual beach training session. Some of the most dedicated karate students from Central Catholic stood out during our training session. The weather this year was a challenge...the coast guard was present and in full force to make sure that we were safe given the extremely powerful ocean surge. The rain seemed to sting as it came down almost sideways...but we worked hard and had a fantastic time!
This year's varsity letter recipients more than doubled when compared to the previous 3 years. I can only imagine what lies ahead in our 5th year of training! I am so proud of these dedicated students...

After all of the hard work, sweat, and desire...the CCHS Karate Club put on one of the most exciting demonstrations that I have been a part of to date. The club was formed in 2008 and has been growing and producing extremely dedicated karate students ever since. The club had a chance yesterday (March 9, 2012) to show off a little bit of our talent and I believe that the CCHS community has a very good idea of how focused and impressive these karate students can be. We, as a group, worked tirelessly to come up with a quick, but meaningful demonstration of Kyokushin Karate...please view the following link to our demo:

I am extremely proud of all of my CCHS Karate Club students past and present and am so thankful to Hanshi Larry Giordano and to Central Catholic for giving me the tools to produce such a wonderful club. I have been involved in karate for about 25 years now and the CCHS Karate Club has been a blessing! I know that the future will bring more good things and many more humble, respectful, and dedicated students!

2012 has started off with a bang! Currently there are over 35 CCHS students actively participating in karate classes on a weekly basis. With an upcoming demonstration to be presented to 1300 people and a new sports season quickly arriving, I hope to welcome many new karate-ka to our club. The demo will take place on March 9th and will include a dozen or so of our most dedicated students. It will include forms, board breaking, and feats of strength! A special thanks goes to Sifu Mike Dayton and Hanshi Larry Giordano for their incredible knowledge of creating spectacular demonstrations.

On a separate note, I have recently recruited a photography student to help with taking pictures and videos of our club in action. These photos and videos will help when it comes to press releases, yearbook pictures, and learning tools. I think it will be great for students to see themselves in action...the best critic is most times yourself. Here's my first video upload...My daughter has started coming to karate classes and tested her knowledge and technique in tameshiwari (with a little help from Dad).

The CCHS Karate Club will begin its 2011-2012 season on Tuesday January 3rd, 2012 at 5:30pm in the Baroni Multipurpose room located on the second floor of CCHS. I am especially excited about this year's classes because we are at an all time high in regards to our student enrollment! We had 50 applicants and we hope that all 50 student/athletes will be in attendance on 1-3-2012!

Once again, it's time to recognize two students who are true budo karate-ka! Each year, a certain number of students are awarded for the dedication, hard work, and spirit that they have demonstrated in the CCHS Karate Club. These students are overachievers and stop at nothing when it comes to the true budo spirit that one and all should have when training in Kyokushin karate.

Amy Whitney Perry and Brendan Stolarz have trained at the CCHS Karate Club for three years now and are the epitome of what a great student should be. They try as hard as they can each and every class, compete in all tournaments and special training sessions, and bring a great attitude to each class. Brendan and Amy started training in 2008 when the club was first organized and have been a big part of its success over the past four years!

I am so proud to recognize Amy and Brendan, and in essence, to put them among the greatest karate-ka that CCHS has ever seen! They now join David Daniels, Daniel Blackwell, and Shannon Bradish as the only "Sensei" award winners in the history of the CCHS Karate Club. I couldn't ask for better students when it comes to karate and I wish them all the best in the future! I know that they will continue to stop by to train or help teach in the future because once your spirit has been touched by the martial arts, you are a part of something special for the rest of your life.

Congratulations Amy and Brendan!

Our 3rd annual beach training and family outing was an incredible success! Once again the Methuen Karate Association, under Hanshi Larry Giordano, was extremely generous in having our club participate with over 150 other karate students from Methuen, Haverhill, and Lawrence. I had hoped that each year, our number of participants would increase and it has! In the last three years, we've gone from 8 students, to 16 students, to a whopping 25 students this year!

The training session itself included a 2km run, kihon, relay races, a tug of war, and of course training in the icy Atlantic Ocean! I'm excited to report that this year, a selection of 5 CCHS students beat three other karate schools to capture the Giordano Family Annual Beach Training Trophy! It's really wonderful to see the CCHS students compete with so much passion and in the end, be rewarded in such a grand way!

At the end of the outing, the CCHS Karate Club students were awarded their Varsity and JV letters with an unbelievable ovation from the other students present.

We are very lucky to have Sempai assist in class at CCHS, she brings a great attitude to everything she does! It's also nice to bring in an assitant instructor who is a female blackbelt. Recently, freshman Greg Walsh tested for his Hachi-kyu or blue belt and was successful in his test. I am pleased with the movitvation that he shows in and out of class. He offers something that not all of my students have and that is experience in the martial arts. He had attained his brown belt in another style of karate and is now hoping to possibly attain black belt in Kyokushin Karate over the next few years. I'm sure that he will be able to accomplish this goal if he continues working as hard as he has in the past.
As always, we are very grateful to all of the MKA black belts who come in as special guest instructors at CCHS. They all offer something special that in the end, will make each one of my students better martial artists.

Last Saturday, May 14th, the CCHS Karate Club hosted it's second annual "teen" tournament. The day was an incredible success. This year we had karate students from not only CCHS and Methuen Karate, but also from the new karate club formed by Hanshi Giordano and Sensei Ken Field at the Greater Lawrence Regional Vocational and Technical High School. This means that our tournament is truly becoming the premier high school karate tournament in Massachusetts if not all of New England.

Over 50 competitors from different high schools around the Merrimack Valley competed vigorously in fighting, forms, and weapons divisions from beginner to advanced status. At the end of the day, we had several students place within the top three of their respective divisions of forms, fighting, and weapons. Cherie Lemay, Amanda Meli, Nicole Kebler, and Natalie Macdonald all brought home first place medals in their respective divisions. While Amy Whitney Perry and Lauren Krugh placed in the top three of their divisions. In the men's division, Neal Drapeau, David Mosto, and Greg Walsh took home first place honors while Brendan Stolarz, Andy Lin, and Dillon McGuinness all placed in the top 3 of their divisions. Jessie Alfonso was selected as the most spirited fighter competing in the advanced fighting division, taking home 3rd place overall.

As always, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Hanshi Larry Giordano, without his constant support and guidance, the CCHS Karate Club would not have opportunities like we did this past Saturday. I'd also like to thank Senseis Mike DiPietro, Kevin Bihl, Bill Sherry, Ken Field, John Goddard and Sempais Steve Hamel, Greg Hamel, and Riane Goddard for their help and support in making this tournament such an overwhelming success.

Lastly, I'd like to say how proud I am of all of my students at CCHS. They all work so hard to improve day to day in not only karate, but all aspects of their lives. It's a blessing to work with such outstanding individuals who train together as a family in our dojo at CCHS!
Up next, our annual beach training and family outing scheduled for June 5th. More information will follow...

This week's board breaking class was a spectacular event that every student embraced as a time to test their skills. We broke over 100 pine boards last night! Whenever we hold a breaking class, the students always surprise themselves. It's amazing to see what the human body is capable of when properly trained. We were lucky enough to have another guest instructor this week. Sensei Mike DiPietro of the Methuen Karate Association was in attendance and gave the CCHS students an opportunity to learn kata and breaking techniques from the highest ranking black belt at MKA under Hanshi Giordano. Sensei brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to class and we really appreciate his time and generosity.

I decided to change things up this week by starting class off with a few videos of Kyokushin at its best. The first video was of Sosai Oyama and his incredible feats of strength in creating what we know now as the "Strongest Karate". Another video depicted various tameshiwari from Kyokushin legends such as Kenji Midori (former world champion), Shokei Matsui (former world champion and victor of the 100 man kumite), as well as other well known Kyokushin practitioners. These inspiring videos gave way to a spirited breaking class.

After our tameshiwari, we broke into groups to work on our kata. Sensei DiPietro worked with our more advanced students, while our Jr. Grade Black Belt Amanda Meli worked with our new students. We are very fortunate to have students in the CCHS Karate Club who are advanced ranks such as Amanda. She is a good role model for other students and will hopefully be our first Sempai at CCHS Karate. Our next big event will be the Second Annual All Valley Karate Tournament on May 14 at CCHS. This tournament will give our students the chance to compete against other high school age martial artists.
Hanshi Larry Giordano, a 9th degree black belt, graced us with his presence during a well attended class at CCHS. Approximately 25 CCHS students had the wonderful opportunity to learn from a very experienced and knowledgeable master of Kyokushin karate. Hanshi is now in his 48th year of karate and has had great success with his dojo located in Methuen for the past 43 years.

I feel that I have been lucky learn from such a highly qualified instructor for over 25 years and luckily, my students can now say the same thing. Amy competed in the 18+ women's division and held her own against much more experienced competition. Jeff Duchesne and Junellie Leon were our junior year level competitors and really made an impact in their divisions. Junellie earned first place in both kata and kumite while Jeff scored a first place victory in forms and battled for a third place finish in a tough teen advanced kumite division. We have between 25 and 30 students each class and about 40 students who have participated in the karate club since November. I have a feeling that even though Sensei Bihl was only here for one class, he still bestowed quite a few lessons to my students.

Some exciting news...

After teaching at the CCHS Karate Club, Sensei Kevin Bihl was awarded his 5th degree black belt from Hanshi Larry Giordano at the black belt training session held at MKA later that same night. We have over 45 students signed up to participate in classes, tournaments, and demonstrations over the 2010-2011 karate club season. I am very pleased that of the 45 students who have signed up for the upcoming karate club season, about 20 of them are returning lettermen. The karate club as a whole has expanded and is in its prime with so many new faces added to the overwhelming majority of expereinced practitioners that we welcome back from last years training.

This years karate club will feature some of the same exciting events such as board breaking classes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, tournament participation, guest instructors, and the very popular beach training event held in June. The karate club will appear in its first major demonstration this upcoming March. The CCHS spirit show will run over the first week of March and the CCHS Karate Club will present an exhilarating demonstration to a student body of over 1300 excited students.

Please check back over the next few weeks for any new and exciting updates. The first class of the season will begin on December 7th, 2010. Classes run from 5:30pm until 7pm and are held in the Baroni Multipurpose room.

Osu!

SenseiSenseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05294915693150294884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-873999772206335454.post-25439725851979944912010-07-21T19:16:00.006-04:002010-07-21T19:33:42.419-04:00"Sensei Award 2010"Osu!

Yet another fantastic year of karate has gone by at the Central Catholic Karate Club and yet another outstanding karateka has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the Sensei Award. Congratulations to Shannon Bradish, a senior, who was chosen to represent all that CCHS Karate is about. This award is given out on a yearly basis to the person(s) who live out the mission of CCHS Karate.

Shannon embodies the spirit, strength, and leadership that accompanies a sempai or senior student. Although Shannon currently holds the rank of go-kyu, she pushes herself to become a better student of karate which in turn, pushes others to become better. This leadership by example is exactly what the discipline and humility of Kyokushin Karate is all about. She may not hold a black belt in Kyokushin Karate yet, but she definitely holds herself, respects others, and works like one!

Shannon has worked so hard over the past two years and it is only fitting to honor her with this prestigous award. Shannon, along with our core group of students have made CCHS Karate an unbelievable success. I am so proud of her! Hopefully, if we at the CCHS Karate Club are lucky, Shannon will train with us again next year during her break from college!

Congratulations Shannon!

Osu!

SenseiSenseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05294915693150294884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-873999772206335454.post-25776838217910060322010-07-07T19:49:00.009-04:002010-07-07T20:06:22.423-04:00MKA/CCHS Karate Beach Training 2010

Osu!

Beach trianing 2010 was a huge success! The CCHS Karate Club and the Methuen Karate Association combined to total over 130 participants at this year's session. The roughly 20 CCHS Karate participants had the chance to chat with some of the most experienced karate ka that MKA had to offer. I am happy to say that the knowledge that comes from the black belts and students at the Methuen Karate Association is a wonderful asset to our program. Since the CCHS Karate club is only going into its third year of karate training, it's nice to know how open and welcoming MKA has been. Sensei DiPietro is currently a 6th degree black belt in Kyokushin Karate and brought over 28 years of experience and knowledge with him to our class.

Sensei DiPietro shared some of his special conditioning exercises to help strengthen the body in preparation for kumite. Some students have already acknowleged some soreness and fatigue from such a great workout last night. Sensei DiPietro's class marked the last class of the year at CCHS.

Some students have been invited by Hanshi Larry Giordano to train at the Methuen Karate Association and I hope they take him up on this offer. Training at the Methuen Dojo is a priviledge that everyone should take part in.

The next event will be our annual Beach Training/Family Outing scuedled for this Sunday June 6th. Last year's event was fantastic...I believe we had 8 students train at Salisbury Beach last June, so I'm hoping to at least double it this year! A new and excited part of this year's Beach Training session will be handing out Varsity/JV letters to club members who have earned them. The step from club status to a varsity sport has improved the development of my students and increased the intensity of their training.

I'm so proud of all of the CCHS Karate students and how much they've put into improving themselves over the past 2 years!

Osu!

SenseiSenseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05294915693150294884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-873999772206335454.post-10124859931755579512010-06-01T11:50:00.011-04:002010-06-03T12:02:48.189-04:00Central Catholic High School All Valley Karate Tournament 2010
Osu!

On May 15th, the CCHS Karate Club hosted the First Annual All Valley Karate Tournament. Congratulations to Trae Musumarra, Jeff Duchesne, Jessie Alfonso, Junellie Leon, Lauren Krugh, Lesa Tran, Cally Konomi, Michelle Lagrange, Renee LeRette and Brian Silvey on their promotion! This is an exciting event at our dojo and these students earned their new blue belts through working with great spirit during a grueling exam. This is just the first step for these karateka...hopefully everyone in our dojo will see that hard work pays off in every aspect of life.

More of our students will be eligible for promotion in April. Tentatively we have one student looking to test for her Shi-Kyu (green belt) during a green and brown belt promotion that will be held at the Methuen Karate Association (CCHS Karate's parent dojo). We also have several students looking to test for Hachi-kyu and Roku-kyu (yellow belt) in the upcoming months. Good luck to all of them! I can't say enough about how proud I am of all of my students and the hard work they put into their training on a daily basis! After the strong Kyokushin warmup, we got started with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Not only did Sensei Goddard offer new and amazing escapes and submissions, but he had a lot of help from one of CCHS Karate's original students in David Daniels. We at the CCHS Karate Club are blessed to have a student as dedicated as David is. Even though David is only a green belt, he offers a vast amount of knowledge and even more spirit to each class. He was the recipient of the "Sensei Award" at last year's senior day assembly. Along with David, Dan Blackwell received the "Sensei Award" and continues to practice Kyokushin Karate while away at college in St. Louis. Dan actually came to class to train and help out last night since he too is home on spring break.

I am very proud of all of my students and I hope that the spirit of CCHS Karate will keep getting stronger and stronger over the years. More on this over the next few weeks!

Osu!

SenseiSenseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05294915693150294884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-873999772206335454.post-90487834104472339292010-01-02T18:02:00.007-05:002010-01-02T18:21:58.133-05:00CCHS Karate 2010Osu!

The CCHS Karate Club has had an extremely successful 2nd season! We have held 4 classes so far and the average attendance is between 30 and 35 students! This is double what we had last year! I believe that the early success of this year is only a glimpse of future success for CCHS Karate!

This year we've introduced the possibility of earning a Varsity or JV letter, competing in a nummber of tournaments, and being a member of a demonstration team as added perks of being a member of the CCHS Karate Club. I am very excited to say that not only do we have a large number of participants (30-35 members), but we also have a number of returning club members participating in classes. David Daniels, Dan Blackwell, and Jay Mackey have all returned from college to train in at least one class with this year's members. I really feel that it is a blessing to have past graduates come back to assist in teaching/train in classes with current students. It really shows the dedication and love for the art the these graduates have.

We were very lucky to have both Hanshi Larry Giordano and Sensei John Goddard of the Methuen Karate Association attend a recent CCHS Karate Club class. Not only was it a surprise visit, but it was a great chance for many of my CCHS Karate students to meet a legend of the karate world in Hanshi Larry Giordano! It is not very often that karate students have the chance to meet a 9th degree black belt. The CCHS Karate club was honored to have Hanshi Giordano and Sensei Goddard as special guest instructors for the night. I hope that they can find time in their busy schedules to train us again in the future. It is always a blessing to have such decorated instructors as special guests to our class at CCHS.

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday vacation...it will be back to the grind come Monday...I hope everyone is excited about getting back into our training schedule come Tuesday night! This month should be very interesting since there is a board breaking class as well as a possible jiu jitsu class scheduled.

Lastly...I hope everyone in the club has their sights set on making this years spirit show demonstration an explosive one!

Osu!

SenseiSenseihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05294915693150294884noreply@blogger.com0
